Some Of Our Favourite Roof Designs From Grand Designs

Here we look at some of our favourite roof designs from iconic Channel 4 television show Grand Designs.

The Curved, Plough Shaped Roof

Host of the show Kevin McCloud was less than optimistic about the curved, plough shaped roof and the couple did find it was more complex to achieve than they initially anticipated. To keep costs down the roof was constructed from straight steel frames which were tightly constructed in triangle shapes. This would then give the illusion of a curved roof. The couple found that putting the roof together took more time than they thought but the we think it was well worth the time and effort and ended up being a beautiful design.

Monty’s Underground Home

This house was subject to planning restrictions which meant no windows were allowed on the front or side walls. This led to the sliding roof which would allow in light, ambiance and ventilation. For this project, the roof was the key to the success of the house. The roof was comprised of three panes and had a low profile pitch. The roof can be slid away completely or can be opened just a crack to allow in air but not water. Made of stainless steel, this roof will look brand new for years to come.

Arched Eco Home

To create this arched eco home, the designers went back in time to use a medieval method called timbrel vaulting. Only 5 inches thick, it uses clay tiled, gravel and soil to create an eco friendly roof in which plants can be grown. Solar panels were also used to generate 3,600kwh of energy every single year which means no power needs to be bought.

Snake House

This curving, snake-like home set a nature-loving couple back £800,000. They spent nine painstaking months attaching the roof panels to the building by hand. 38 pieces of bespoke glue laminated timber was also required to bend the roof into shape and 33 solar panels cut into bespoke shapes also completed the roof. The finished result is a beautiful and striking building that has amazing views of Blackdown Hills.
